We brought out Indian mentality here is the US?
We are getting obsessed with school districts and school API scores.
We are sending out kids to karate, kumon, dancing, singing classes etc.
We are pressurizing them to keep up with the competition.
Do we really want to make them suffer like we went through while studying in India?
We move around in Indian communities only.We go out to eat Indian food during weekends? as if the whole week is not enough.
keep up with your comments and I will keep on replying
My thoughts
Well, I can't say about kids, because I don't have any. But well, I am not someone who mixes around only with Indians or eats only Indian food :). But I know what you are talking about :) and I have always wondered how they do that!
I think this country (or any country) gives us this opportunity to broaden our horizons. To learn new things, to meet new kinds of people, to understand different cultures. And we should imbibe the good things, rather than complain, that "These Americans have no values". I am so sick of hearing that! Like all Indians live lives of saints!! I wish we Indians were not so judgmental.
I agree with Debashri. We
I agree with Debashri. We should not be judgmental. Our kids will also pick up our vibes. Be loving and respectful to every culture is very important.
My thoughts, again :)
On the other hand, I don't feel everything is bad about the Indian mentality. This point that you have mentioned about kids being taught different things.... I think it keeps them busy, active and lets them check out different things and realize what they really want to do. At least, I don't regret going to singing classes, or karate classes or cooking classes :). So, when I didn't have a job when I came here, I joined clay flower making classes. Now, I have made a career out of that! And music remains my passion. And, I am a decent enough cook... Don't know about Karate though.... LOL! So..... umm.... I feel trying out different things is actually pretty healthy, if we don't pressurize kids too much. I personally don't feel too great about an energetic kid not having much to do. Sports, music, arts.... I feel, they keep kids away from the 'bad' things.
